Quote of the Week: Live simply that others might simply live. ~Elizabeth Ann Seton
Seton was born in 1774 in NYC and died 1821. Beatified 17 Mar 1963 by Pope John XXIII and canonized 14 Sept 1975 by Pope Paul VI.
This is the first time I have heard that Seton said this, and she may have. I had always heard it was either attributed to Mahatma Ghandi [Indian political and spiritual leader (1869 - 1948)] or to a Native American whose name I can't recall.

The purpose of a dog!
A Dog's Purpose?(from a 6-year-old).
Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle. I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.
As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.
The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker 's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.
The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.
Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, ''I know why.''Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation. It has changed the way I try and live.He said,''People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?'' The six-year-old continued,''Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long.'

quotes for our best friends
My family is first, of course. My husband Eddie is my heart and my very best friend. I am truly blessed. However, there are special friends in my life, and these are my dogs and cats and birds.
The birds were cockatoos named Chip and Dale. Dale would take showers with me every morning and greet everyone with a tweet. Our dogs have been many: Deno (killed by a car), Froggy (stolen), Ringer (snakebite), Lady (died of broken heart--missed us), Moe (died of old age 14), Maui (stolen), Milo (died of old age), Cleo (ran away to good family that loved her more than we did, I guess), Ripley (died of old age 15), and Cheech (died of old age 12). Our cats have been many as well: Gizmo (stolen), Goonie (who thought he was a dog and ran off Shepherds and Rottweilers!), L.K. (lived to be 18), Whiteout (killed by dogs), Bogey (killed by mountain lion), Emma Bean (died of kidney disease), and Wednesday June, a kitten that found us by following my son and his dog Milo, a 100# Lab, home one day. Wednesday is still with us, and she's 10 1/2 y.o. My son's dog Frauke (German for "little lady") is living with us. Wednesday and Frauke love my son and my husband best in that order, but when they are afraid or lonely or hungry or cold (and no one else is available), I am their 1st choice. LOL Each one was loved and cherished and ALL were rescues from cold streets, pounds, humane society, or cruel people.
I dearly miss each one of these joyous, special friends.
Here are the quotes--collected by my brother Matt:
If a dog jumps in your lap, it is because he is fond of you; but if a cat doesthe same thing, it is because your lap is warmer.
~Alfred North Whitehead (1861 - 1947)
Don't accept your dog's admiration as conclusive evidence that you arewonderful.
~Ann Landers (1918 - 2002)
I loathe people who keep dogs. They are cowards who haven't got the guts to bite people themselves. ~August Strindberg (1849 - 1912), A Madman's Diary, 1895
Yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table.
~Bible, Matthew 15:27.
Yesterday I was a dog. Today I'm a dog. Tomorrow I'll probably still be a dog. Sigh! There's so little hope for advancement.
~Charles M. Schulz (1922 - 2000), (Snoopy)
A dog owns nothing, yet is seldom dissatisfied. ~Irish Proverb
Who knew that dog saliva can mend a broken heart?

~John Grogan, An Interview with John Grogan, 2008
A person can learn a lot from a dog, even a loopy one like ours. Marley taught me about living each day with unbridled exuberance and joy, about seizing the moment and following your heart. He taught me to appreciate the simple things -a walk in the woods, a fresh snowfall, a nap in a shaft of winter sunlight. And as he grew old and achy, he taught me about optimism in the face of adversity. Mostly, he taught me about friendship and selflessness and, above all else, unwavering loyalty.
~John Grogan, Marley and Me, 2005
We could have bought a small yacht with what we spent on our dog and all the things he destroyed. Then again, how many yachts wait by the door all day foryour return?
~John Grogan, Marley and Me, 2005
A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself.
~Josh Billings (1818 - 1885)
If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog and a man.
~Mark Twain (1835 - 1910)
We are alone, absolutely alone on this chance planet: and, amid all the forms of life that surround us, not one, excepting the dog, has made an alliance with us.
~Maurice Maeterlinck (1862 - 1949)
On the Internet, nobody knows you're a dog.
~Peter Steiner, cartoon in The New Yorker, July 5, 1993
I wonder if other dogs think poodles are members of a weird religious cult.

Duetto-Sul Aria
“I tell you those voices soared
Higher and farther than anybody in a gray place dares to dream.
It was like some beautiful bird flapped into our drab little cage
and made those walls dissolve away
And for the briefest of moments…
Every last man in Shawshank felt free.”
Stephen King’s words
Oh this man can write as well as Mozart composed.

Mozart
Mozart was only 5'4" tall. So much talent in such a small package.
